5 Tips for Building a Personal Brand Online and Creating Content on Social Media

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

One of the reasons I started Oversubscribed.co.uk was to help impressive entrepreneurs spread their wisdom, knowledge and positivity into the world (all while raising their profile within their industry). I hope these tips help you do the same:

1. Decide what you want to be known for.

At Oversubscribed we call these your content pillars. What is your niche? It’s worth spending some time figuring this out and defining a clear message. For example, when someone thinks of ‘Chris Moss’, I want to be known as the person helping entrepreneurs raise their profile online. My content generally leans towards this.

2. Create a clear plan and strategy

Before jumping into creating content, you want to spend some time thinking about your strategy. What are you going to post? Where are you going to post it?

If you don’t have a clear plan, as soon as you get busy, your content will fall away (like 99% of people who want to raise their profile but don’t).

3. Be consistent

Whether you get a team to help you with this or find a way to do it yourself, you have to keep your content consistent. If you have a few weeks of posting, then stop for a month and start again, it’s impossible to build an audience. This is a full time thing for 2+ years before you can expect to gain any real traction.

4. Respect your audience

Treat your social media channels the same as you would a networking event. You wouldn’t stand in the middle of a networking event and try to sell to everyone all the time. You’d chat, add value, entertain and engage. If people weren’t liking what you were saying, you’d change angle or topic. Do the same with your social media content.

5. Find your supporters

Presuming you are a nice person, you will most likely have supporters in real life (friends, family, colleagues). Find these people and connect with them online across all your platforms. They are likely to support your content early on before you’ve found messages that resonate with your wider audience.
